The True Cost of Food Convenience

Have you seen McDonald’s newest ad campaign?

The intention is to be unapologetic about the Big Mac. To be honest, they are absolutely right. McDonald’s does not have to apologize for creating one of the world’s most valuable brands. Many of us have enjoyed McDonald’s. We’ve all WANTED McDonald’s at some point…but at what cost?

What has it cost you to consume fast foods?

Often times, society’s’ outcry is to blame the company. In some cases, an apology is required. In other cases, like the fast food industry, maybe not. For-profit businesses are in business to make a profit. A business will create a product they believe will benefit the consumer. Often times, the initial question asked before developing a product is not so much about the product itself but about the benefit of the product. Fast food restaurants main BENEFIT is convenience not health. Think about those places you frequent the most….we’ll wait.

Health is so far from the BENEFIT of fast food, it’s really not funny.

It’s not funny that 78.6 million people in the U.S is overweight or obese. A staggering 8 out of 10 African American women are overweight or obese. It’s not funny that the obesity rate continues to increase and young children under the age of 10 are being diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol. These statistics are not funny.

But what do we do? Ask fast food restaurants to apologize?

Not at all.

What we will ASK you to do is to educate yourself. We recall when we were growing up, fast food was a treat. If we did well on report card day or did our chores, we were rewarded with going out to eat. Fast food was not an every day meal. Today, fast food has become breakfast, lunch, &/or dinner every day. Convenience is being sold at a seemingly cheap price….but realize, perception is everything.

What may be cheap to grow, manufacture, ship, freeze, cook, sell, purchase, & consume, is NOT cheap! The price is so high many of us are dying in debt. Think about this, life is priceless and we are giving it away at the cost for convenience, easy, & cheap.

High blood pressure, diabetes, gout, high cholesterol, cancer, heart disease, fatigue, & so many other obesity related aliments are the debt collectors knocking at your door…and an apology won’t fix any of it. An apology is simply a way of accepting accountability & responsibility for an offense or failure.

Truth is, fast food did not fail you. It does EXACTLY what it is made to do. Fast food provides convenience. It is the misconception of “convenience” that is costing us dearly.

Are we telling you to never eat fast food again? No, we are not.

Are we saying fast food is the only culprit? Absolutely not.

Is it a contributing factor? Absolutely & unequivocally YES!

At the end of the day, what you do consistently matters. If you know you eat out more often then you eat meals from home, then we would ask you to begin making some changes there. Why? Because home=control. Carve out some time on your day off to cook a few meals for the week. While it may take you some time on the front end to get prepared, you will value the “convenience” it creates for you on the back end.
